A Free Multiplayer Demo of the most hotly anticipated games of 2011 “Crysis 2” is now available for Xbox 360 video game and PC. The PlayStation 3 demo is coming soon.

As per their Press Release:

Crysis 2’s dynamic multiplayer is built around the franchise’s signature Nanosuit, an advanced exoskeleton giving every player super powers that will allow them to be strong, be invisible and be fast on the battlefield.

All versions of the new demo will include two maps, “Skyline” and “Pier 17”, as well as two modes “Team Instant Action” and “Crash Site”. Crysis 2 multiplayer will include six intense, action-fueled gameplay modes: Instant Action, Team Instant Action, Crash Site, Capture the Relay, Extraction and Assault, set across 12 maps in Crytek’s visually stunning recreation of the Big Apple. Players will advance through a deep progression system of 50 levels, earning a variety of upgrades along the way for weaponry and the Nanosuit itself, rewarding long-term players with tactical advantages that increase their speed, strength and stealth abilities even more.

When the Xbox 360 turned 5 years old this week with no known successor on the horizon, and no new imminent PlayStation or Wii either, it may well have signaled the demise of one of the video game industry's most longstanding truisms.

Since at least the mid-1980s, major console makers have generally come out with new models every five years or so. For example, the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) came out in 1985, followed by the Super NES in 1991, the Nintendo 64 in 1996, the GameCube in 2001, and the Wii in 2006. Sony put out the first PlaySation in 1995 and followed up with the PS2 in 2000 and the PS3 in 2006. And Microsoft introduced the original Xbox in 2001 and released the Xbox 360 in 2005.

There are two factors at play as to why there are no "new" consoles.

1- There's been a recession on the go, that is said to be even worse than the Great Depression of the previous century. This recession has harmed the semiconductor industry and I have first-hand experience of the massive shortages and lack of new products. Last year, we saw leadtimes of almost 12 calendar months. The earthquakes in Japan spelled disaster for an already compromised industry.

2- Current microprocessor technology has reached a practical limit, and to go beyond this requires further developments in the technology used to fabricate microrprocessors. Even with multi-core technology, the limitations has been reached.

The XBOX 360 is a poor design, and this is what happens when Blue Collar programmers (aka Microsoft Fanboys or Bill Gates wannabees) attempt to delve into the realities of hardware design when all they have ever known all their lives is their beloved .net bloatware and Microsoft corporate culture, the same kind who have never soldered a joint in their life and detest Linux like the plague.

I think Blossomoo is a bot.

Also I think your last paragraph was perhaps a bit over zealious. Sony are in the same boat as MS with regards to moving to next-gen, neither are closer than the other.
Nintendo have already announced WiiU their interim console (its not their next-gen console) but thats only because they were forced to because Sony & MS have captured the hardcore market.

Your recession point is very valid though, why take a risk with a new console when you're still making plenty of money from the current gen. 2011 has probably been the most financially succesful year in the game industry to date. And that despite gamers advently expressing their views on overpricing of games and gaming periphials. It doesn't make sense to gamble on new highly priced console which may not offer much more than current gen.
Rather wait it out, develop a genuinely new product and release it at a justifiable price.

Its also worth to mention that they have already added hardware (PS Move, Kinect) to the current gen which hasn't really been done in previous cycles.
